‘Cherry’ Tops Camera Operators Awards

Geoffrey Haley won the Society of Camera Operators’ Camera Operator of the Year Award in film, for his work on the Russo Bros.’ Cherry. The Apple TV+ release — for which its DP, Newton Thomas Sigel, is nominated for an American Society of Cinematographers Award — follows the journey of the film’s titular PTSD-suffering war vet, played by Tom Holland.

Also Sunday during the SOC Awards celebration, Jim McConkey won the camera operator of the year award in television, for Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Haley topped a field of nominees that included Don Devine and George Billinger for Greyhound, Jason Ellson for Mulan, John “Buzz” Moyer for The Hunt and Sasha Proctor for The Outpost. In the television competition, the SOC also nominated Devine for Perry Mason, Simon Jayes for The Mandalorian, Andrew Mitchell for Ratched and Henry Tirl for Wandavision.

The presentation to the close-knit group included clips and conversation about the work with each nominee. Haley described a complex drone shot from Cherry‘s war scene, and McConkey introduced his oner in the Mrs. Maisel‘s sequence during which Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) arrives to perform as part of a USO tour.

Sunday’s Zoom program also included a look the SOC education committee’s programs held amid the pandemic and the Society’s charitable work in support of the Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

In another portion of the show, members were asked to either speak or write (in the chat section) about those lost this past year, remembering industry colleagues and friends including cinematographers Michael Chapman, Allen Daviau, Isidore Mankofsky and Denny Clairmont, as well as family members.

The program included clips of previous awards ceremonies. Following the show, “virtual after parties” were held in breakout rooms.
